(b. Juchittan, Oaxaca, Mexico, 1940). Toledo is primarily a painter but is also recognized for his drawings and prints. His work explores the folklore and mythology of Oaxaca as well as a visual form of Magic Realism. Toledo was born in Juchittan Oaxaca, Mexico in 1940 in to a Zapotec Indian family. He began his studies in the workshop of Arturo Garcia Busos a graphic artist in Oaxaca. He then continued his studies at the Taller Libre del Grabado in Mexico City. He traveled to the United States and in 1959 was given his first solo exhibition in Fort Worth Texas. During the 1960's Toledo traveled throughout Europe and the U.S exhibiting in New York, Paris, London, and Geneva. He returned to Mexico and settled in Oaxaca in 1968. He continued to work in a variety of media including watercolors, drawings, assemblage, ceramics, and prints and even tapestry design.
