Havana Biennial 2000
by Susana Bautista and Bill Kelley

Day I

Just 3 days before the official opening of the 7th International Biennial of Havana, and the city is already bustling with artists, curators, and press from around the world. At the same time, the Encuentro Mundial de Amistad y Solidaridad, an annual event protesting the U.S. embargo, has filled the city with politicans, international delegations, and even more press. It is an exciting time!

The Havana Biennial, organized by the Wilfredo Lam Contemporary Art Center, is scheduled from November 17, 2000 to January 10, 2001. Participating in this Biennial are 174 artists representing 44 countries, mostly those under-represented of Latin America, Africa, and Asia. The exhibitions will be located in over 20 locations across Havana, mostly in the Historical Center of the city.

This Biennial will reflect on the transcendental aspects of the artworld and the artists projects that propose a dialogue between people as a means of efficient communication in order to break the intolerance and communicative barriers between art and the audience.
