(b. Guatemala, 1954). Trained as an architect at the University of San Carlos in Guatemala, it has long been Aguilar's ambition to marry the pictorial arts with architecture, particularly the imagery of Renaissance Europe with that of pre-Columbian America. He has experimented with various images, structures, colors and schemes- perhaps most successfully in the mid '90s when he incorporated new world colors, myths and environments into the old-world format of the altarpiece or retablo. In these panels he animates and harmonizes people, plants, fruit and architectural elements into lyrical tropical images that meld the rational with the fantastic, the old-world with the new.
