(b. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic 1891; d. 1985). The first modern woman painter of the Dominican Republic. Woss y Gil studied with Abelardo Rodriguez Urdaneta at the Academia de Artes in Santiago de Cuba and at the Art Students League, in New York City. On returning to the Dominican Republic in 1924, she began painting in a Post-Impressionist style, being the first to depict the female nude and concentrating on the mulatta model. She also did numerous works employing the tropical light and warm colors of the island. In 1924 Woss y Gil opened an academy of painting and drawing in Santo Domingo where she studied of the live model and caused an uproar. Many important artists studied with Woss y Gil who, in 1942, was appointed professor at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes.
