(b.Puerto Rico, 1751; d. 1809). José Campeche is considered the father of Puerto Rican painting. Renowed during his lifetime as the foremost artist of his day, José Campeche painted numerous portraits of the criollo aristocracy, church officials and viceroys. He was also commissioned to a large body of religous paintings.
