Bonillas has been exhibiting internationally since 1998. His piece deconstructing the apparatus of photography, 10 Cameras Documented Acoustically (10 cámaras documentadas acústicamente) was installed that year as a listening station at a Tower Records store in Mexico City. His work has been the focus of many solo exhibitions including Photographic Views from a Wall (Galería de Arte Mexicano, Mexico City, 2002), Audiovisivi (Galeria Boedone, Milan, 2001), Sala de Proyectos (Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico City, 2000), and Foto apertura la Bf15, Mexico City, 1998). He has also participated in several group exhibitions such as Short Stories mounted at the Fabbrica del Vapore (Milan, 2001), Segundo Festival Internacional de Arte Sonoro at Accesso A (Mexico City, 2000), and Made in Mexico Made in Venezuela at Art Metropole (Toronto, 1998).
