(b. Holguín, Cuba, 1955). Cuenca has lived and worked in New York City since 1991. An early pioneer of conceptual art in Cuba, Cuenca is a photographer who questions the fragility of the photographic image and written language. Much of his work combines text with multiple photographic images and photo-montages. These are often presented on multiple, transparent and/or reflexive planes, occasionally joined to create free-standing, sculptural pieces. Through this layering Cuenca's work questions the perceived flatness and stability of the photographic image. Highlighting discrepancies between the mind and the eye, these work strive to identify and deconstruct perceived reality. Cuenca's photographs have additionally addressed issues of political and social displacement, with such works as "This isn't Havana" from 1990.
