(born 1959, Antwerp, Belgium; lives in Mexico City). After studying at the Institute of Architecture in Venice and working briefly in Europe, Alÿs traveled to Mexico in 1987 as part of a French assistance program, where he met several Mexican and expatriate artists, including Gabriel Orozco, Diego Toledo, Melanie Smith, and Thomas Glassford. His first solo show, Festac 77, was presented at the Salón de los Aztecas (Mexico City, 1991). Subsequent solo exhibitions were held at the Galería Camargo Vilaça (Sío Paulo, 1995), ACME (Santa Monica, California, 1996), Jack Tilton Gallery (New York, 1997), Contemporary Art Gallery (Vancouver, 1998), Lisson Gallery (London, 1999) and Peter Kilchmann Galerie (Zurich, 1999). He has also participated in many group shows, among them V Bienal de la Habana (Cuba, 1994) and NowHere at the Louisiana Museum in Copenhagen (Denmark, 1996).
