(b. San José, Costa Rica, 1912; d. 1998).
A sculptor, printmaker, and draughtsman, Francisco Zúñiga studied sculpture under his father, Manuel María Zúñiga, in San José, Costa Rica. He then moved to Mexico City and studied at the Escuela de Talla Directa. There, under the influence of Oliviero Martínez and the painter Manuel Rodríguez, he developed his monumental approach to the human, primarily female, form. His career has been dedicated to representing indigenous women from south-eastern Mexico. Their monumental bodies with markedly indigenous features refer to Pre-Columbian concepts of an earth mother and relate, but does not restrict his work, to the indigenismo movement.
Between the years of 1938 to 1970 he taught at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura y Escultura La Esmeralda as well as completing several public monuments for the state of Mexico. He later traveled to the United States and Europe where he exh
