(b. Heredia, Costa Rica, 1961). He graduated in 1982 with a degree in fine art from the National University in Heredia, Costa Rica. In 1987 Hernández received the prestigious Fulbright scholarship and subsequently obtained a masters in painting in 1989 from the Pratt Institute in New York. During this time, he studied under the painter Stephen Greene in the Arts Student League of New York and his art became more spontaneous and expressive. As is evident in "Heredia," he later created a series of works with mutilated torsos, much like those of Greek sculptures. Under his scrutiny, the human parts are symbolic representation of the human interior. Hernández' work has been exhibited throughout Latin America, Europe and the United States.
