(b. San Salvador, El Salvador, 1924).
Carlos Canas attended the Escuela de Artes Gráficas and in 1950 received a scholarship to study in Spain and France. In 1958 he returned to El Salvador and began teaching at Escola de Arquitetura de El Salvador. Canas is influential not only as an artist, but also as an important teacher, in a country where public institutions face many difficulties. The artist currently lives and works in San Salvador.
Historical and cultural aspects accompany Canas’ colorful, pictorial skill. Since 1959, his work has evolved from the initial monumental abstracted works to the political and ideological analysis in the series Los Hospitales. His pieces then evolved towards magical realism.
