(b. Cartago, Costa Rica, 1941). He studied briefly under the painter Marco Aurelio Aguilar at the San Luis Gonzaga College. Carballo's art has been shown by the Museum of Modern Latin American Art, OEA, in Washington, D.C. and the Jade Museum in Costa Rica. The figures in his art, particularly during the 70's and early 80's, are tied to the reality of his surroundings. Though the works themselves are expressionistic and the application gestural, their message and impact is clear: Carballo leads the viewer to the heartbreaking effect of brutality in Central American life upon the psyche. Again and again, his works have been described as a construction of the interior of a human being, with all of its corresponding emotion and power.
