Andres Campos Cervera (aka Julian de la Herreria)is the influential artist, best known as the first Paraguayan ceramist. He also created paintings, engravings, drawings, woodcuts and linoleum cuts. The artist, who often worked under the pseudonym Julian de la Herreria, left Paraguay in 1908, returning only intermittently to his home country.
Campos Cervera traveled to Spain where he enrolled in the San Fernando Academy in Madrid, studying under Garnelo and Sorolla. He then studied ceramics in Manises, Spain. Campos Cervera explored Europe, residing in Paris in 1919. In France the artist’s color palette became lighter and he worked predominantly as a painter in impressionist and post-impressionist styles, experimenting with light and landscapes inspired by the Mediterranean coast. In 1921, he abandoned painting, until his final years, for ceramics where he focused on pre-Columbian pottery techniques. Andres Campos Cervera was the first Parag
