(b. Cuba, 1942). Luis Cruz Azaceta emigrated from Cuba to the United States in 1960, became a US citizen in 1967, and graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1969. He has exhibited internationally since 1971 and has taught at the University of California and Louisiana State University. Azaceta utilizes paint to investigate the relationship of the exile to an alien society and history in relation to the exile. Fragile Crossing, created for the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' voyage, depicts a modern voyager in a dangerous voyage of political, rather than adventurous, escape. His paintings are often bright with bold patterns and imaginative creatures. Azaceta’s work is in public and private collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Richard Brown Baker Art Collection, Yale University, Connecticut; the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachuset
