She works in an expressionist style that is only vaguely figurative. Avila's palette moves from a darker to a more colorful one. She has had various individual exhibitions in Costa Rica, including a mural at the Costa Rican College of Law. Avila has also participated in many group exhibitions in Panama, Chile, and the United States.
