(b. Mexico City, Mexico, 1967). Rafael Lozano received his B.S. in Physical Chemistry from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. He now lives in Madrid, Spain and lectures internationally at venues including the Guggenheim in New York and MOCA in Los Angeles. Not only does Lozano incorporate installation, multi-media, and performance into his art, but he is active in radio. From 1987-1992, the artist was producer and co-host of "The Postmodern Commotion," a weekly radio program, in Montréal, where he conducted original interviews with people including Octavio Paz, Carlo Rubbia, Jean Fancois Lyotard, Jin Hi Kim, Terry Eagleton, William Gibson, Elia Arce, Louis Andriessen, Sylvere Lotringer, Francesc Torres, Eliott Sharp, Julie Cruise, Fred Frith, and Douglas Crimp. Lozano is also a writer and has been published in Kunstforum (Germany), Leonardo (USA), Performance Research (UK), Telepolis (Germany), Movimiento Actual (Mexico), Archis (Netherlands) and other art and media publications. Lozano's recent video installation, at the 7th Havana Biennial, 33 Preguntas por minuto: Arquitectura relacional No. 5, consists of small screens connected to keyboards where the viewer is invited to enter in any question. The words are then subjected to random sequencing and selection processes, in which the question format is kept intact, resulting in a steady stream of nonsensical poetry. Lozano has received many awards including the Media Arts Grant, Canada Council for the Arts, 2001; Excellence Award, Media Arts Festival 2000, CG Arts, Tokyo, Japan; Medienkunstpreis 2000, Finalist, ZKM, Karlsruhe; Ars Electronica 2000, Interactive Art Golden Nica, Linz; SFMOMA Webby Awards 2000, Distinction, San Francisco; Ars Electronica '98, Interactive Art Honorable Mention, Linz, Austria. September 1998.
