(b. Cuba, 1957). Maria Elena Gonzalez has been creating art in Brooklyn, New York since 1988. Her installation Magic Carpet/Home have been on public display in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Brooklyn, New York. The installation consists of a life-size floor plan of a public housing unit. The layout is completely recreated into a magical flying carpet. Each sculpture is installed in, and created for, public areas such as parks-areas which are part of the daily lives of the public housing residents.

Her installations are large, with a recent being Basebowl (2001), consisting of wood, vinyl and baseballs. The piece is 45'X15' diameter and was displayed at the Queens Museum of Art "Crossing the Line" exhibit. "Double Happiness" (2001) is 8'X15', made of wood, epoxy resin, and pigment, displayed at Sonsbeek 9, in Arnhem, Netherlands.

The artist has received grants from Anonymous Was a Woman, Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Tiffany Foundation, The Joan Mitchell Foundatio
