Monique Prieto is a contemporary abstract painter who received her BFA from both the University of California, in Los Angeles (1987) and the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles, California (1992). She continued at California Institute of the Arts and received an MFA in 1994. Prieto has exhibited internationally with her most recent one-person exhibitions, 2001-2002, being at Corvi-Mora, London, England, and ACME. Los Angeles, California.

In Prieto's paintings, each shape represents a character, a feeling, an object, or some element that has a definite purpose of being there, yet she does not want to impose much of her own narrative as it may be limiting to the viewer. The shapes are often amorphous, in bold colors and have been exhibited as "Stream of Consciousness" works. The Amnesty International USA Folio, a 2002 benefit compilation of contemporary artists, will include Monique Prieto, and will first be on view at The A
