(b. Popayau, Colombia, 1920). A sculptor, he studied in the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Calí, Colombia. He travelled extensively throughout his early career, living in New York City, from 1948- 1950 and in Europe from 1951- 1955. In Europe he met Alberto Giacometti, Wilfredo Lam, Alejandro Otero, and Constantin Brancusi among others. His early work from 1955 were visually complex machines, made up of various parts, held together by visible bolts and screws. To unify the various parts, he painted the machines in strong basic colors. Yet these machines look too complex to function, making them functional only as idea; they represented the machine as single object that is unified within itself. He brings out the essence of the machine as a repeating, almost poetic, parts, form, uniformity and continuity. His later sculpture, still made of steel or metal with its parts showing, is simpler in form, with the various parts repeating itself more within the work. His work is more
