(b. Mexico City, Mexico 1958).
Laura Anderson Barbata studied at the School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, where she immersed herself in etching and sculpture. She then returned to Mexico where she studied architecture at Motolinia University until she honed in on sociology at UCSD in San Diego, CA.

Laura first exhibited her work in 1986 in Mexico’s National Gallery of Plastic Arts, where she won a prize for her drawing. Since then, she has shown her work in more than 60 exhibitions across North and South America and done extensive work with different indigenous peoples of South America. Her work with native communities is a big influence that manifests itself in Laura’s recent photographs, installations, and sculptures.

Laura’s recent shows include Huellas de lo infinito (infinite traces) (2000, Ramis Barquet Gallery), and In the Order of Chaos (1998, Austin Museum of Art, Texas). She is represented in the collections of both the Metropolitan Museum of Art...
