(b. 1943, Bogotá, Colombia; d. 1995, Bogotá).
Luis Caballero studied at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá and at the Académie de La Grand Chaumière in Paris in 1963. His works typically show male figures in eroticized, contorted poses that suggest acute pain or passion. As it is unclear whether the figures are in ecstasy or pain, his paintings communicate an idea of the sublime and suggest religious themes of redemption achieved through penance. Caballero was influenced by the Neo-figurative style of British artist Francis Bacon and the art of Old Masters such as Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Géricault. His shadowy Untitled of 1989, rendered in earthtones, shows a partly nude male facing downward. It seems to refer to 17th-century Spanish paintings of the martyrdom of St. Peter. His work has been widely shown, and he represented Colombia in the 1969 Paris Biennale and the 1973 Sío Paulo Bienal.
