(b. Medellín, Colombia, 1910).
Débora Arango studied at the Instituto de Bellas Artes in Medellín, Colombia. Considered a pioneering social and feminist artist in Latin America, her early work shows suggestive female nudes and deals with religious themes relating to her own life. In 1938 Arango became increasingly concerned with social issues, and in 1944 she was part of a group of artists that issued the Manifiesto de los Independientes (The Independents' Manifesto), which asserted the value of art to educate. Arango's work became openly feminist, in terms of private life as well as social and political issues related to women. While some of her work is specific to local events, other pieces comment on universals such as violence and power. Her work was censored until the 1970s; exhibitions were shut down when her female nudes and social topics were considered unacceptable. She was also marginalized for adhering to Figuratism when Abstraction was dominant...
