(b. San Diego, California, 1942).
Yolanda Lopez, is a painter whose work emphasizes Chicano culture and identity. She earned a Masters degree in Fine Arts from University of California in 1978. She is currently a visiting lecturer in painting at the California College of Arts and Crafts in San Francisco. She painted a mural at the Chicano Park with a group of women from San Diego during the 1970’s. She is known for her Guadalupe series in oil pastel on paper with collage from 1978-1979. She merges symbolism of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a key figure within the Catholic church, with the Cuatlicue/Tonantzin, and Aztec goddesses. This combination acknowledges the idols of feminist artists, racial, and religious affirmation of the Chicano movement. In another series she replaces the Virgin of Guadalupe, with her grandmother, mother, or herself. The Virgin of Guadalupe has a religious and spiritual aspect to Chicanos, she becomes of ethnic pride. The image becomes a role
