Hermes Armijo Maletz

(b. Lima, Honduras, 1951).
Maletz graduated from the Nacional School of Fine Arts with advanced studies at La Escuela Esmeralda in Mexico City, where he lived till 1973. His paintings are in the Neo- Expressionist style and generally deal with the subjects of campesinos (farmers) with their chores, traditions, and sufferings. They also include humble city people and the social problems of his country. He experimented with different techniques and types of medium such crayon, pastel, tempera, acrylic, ink on canvas and usually worked in a large scale. Maletz deals with very traditional and realistic Honduran themes, although his style is abstract. Later Maletz portrayed political satire in his works, which won him several awards.
Maletz has exhibited in numerous national exhibitions in Cuba, El Salvador, Nicaragua, United States, and Guatemala. He has received more than 60 awards, including the Presidential Gold Medal in 1986.
