(b. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1843; d. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1923) Ferrez is known for his photography and contributions to photographic and cinematic technological innovation. Ferrez's father came to Brazil as a member of French le Breton mission. At the age of seven, Ferrez's parents died and he was taken to Paris and left in the care of the sculptor Alphee Dubois. He returned to Rio de Janeiro in 1859 and became involved with photography. He opened his own photography studio in 1865. In 1873 he acquired a panoramic camera and accompanied Charles Frederick Hartt on an expedition to North Eastern Brazil. He spent the next years of his life perfecting the techniques of panoramic photography resulting in his invention of a 190-degree panoramic camera. His panoramic photographs received many awards including the gold medal at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1889 and grand prize at the Brazilian exhibition of 1881.
