(b. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1964).
Dias studied at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro; the Schule für Gestaltung, Basel, Switzerland; and The P.M. Workshop, New York City. Now living and working in Basel, Switzerland, Mauricio Dias and Walter Riedweg have collaborated since 1993 on interdisciplinary public art projects. Drawing on their backgrounds in music and performing and visual arts, Dias and Riedweg use research, workshops, and multiple levels of discourse to build installations created through engagements with diverse groups of people. Believing art can be a specific form of social practice, they combine documentary work with staged elements and vernacular cultural forms to explore the displacements and misrepresentations of individuals in social and political fields. By inserting themselves in what they call "social territories," Dias and Riedweg create previously absent connections between the everyday and the art world.
