(b. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1957). Bechara attended the School of Fine Arts in Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro from 1987 to 1991. Both gritty and philosophical, Bechara's work is the commonplace as a path to the contemplation of time and extinction. Though his "paintings" are technically works on canvas, Bechara utilizes the canvas covering for trucks, layering steel wool upon them and rusting the whole by wetting them in a process that takes up to several months. The metallic material is often in varying stages of decomposition, the surfaces rough, cracked and discolored. His art is a tangible illustration not only of the ephemeral nature of life, of its inevitable change and decomposition, but also of its partnership with time. Together, life and time degrade the original state of most objects.
