After studying art at the Escola de Artesanato of the Museu de Arte Moderna (1953), Antonio Henrique Amaral studied graphics with the Japanese artist Shiko Munakata (1959) at the Pratt Institute in New York. Amaral began to exhibit his graphics, and in 1967 issued a series of prints titled Mine and Thine. His woodcut And You, Brutus! of 1967 mixes a Pop art style with one gleaned from Brazilian "cordel" literature. It shows two big-eyed males in military uniform, one holding a drinking glass. Created after the military-led coup in 1964, the work was a criticism of Brazilian politics. In addition to woodcuts, Amaral began to paint in 1967. His executed multiple series of Pop Art bananas, to which he later added forks and ropes while living in New York. A retrospective of his work took place at the Museu de Arte Moderna in Sío Paulo in 1986, and his paintings appeared in the Indianapolis Museum of Art's influential exhibition,
