(b. Horconcitos, Chiriquí, Panama, 1927).
This sculptor, painter, ceramicist, printmaker, tapestry designer and landscape designer is one of the most influential artists in his native Panama. Trujillo studied both architecture and painting in Panama and held his first exhibition in 1953. He continued his studies at the Real Academia de San Fernando in Madrid (1954-58). His personal iconography is rooted in Panama’s pre-Colombian history and Indian mythology. In 1959 he began his long career as a teacher while creating works that resembled social satires with monstrous figures. In the 1970’s and 80’s he made reoccurring references to the patterns of pre-Colombian ceramics and natural and bio-morphic forms. His use of indigenous symbols and ceremonies reflects his Panamanian roots while a personal spiritual language and imagined landscapes reflect a pictorial reality.
