(b. Guadalajara, Mexico, 1887; d. Mexico City, 1968).
This mexican painter was born to an affluent family; grandson of Jose Guadalupe Montenegro, who gave his fortune to liberal causes, and a cousin of Amado Nervo, co publisher of "La Revista Moderna de Mexico." Montenegro is important for his efforts to preserve and promote Mexican popular arts as for his own artistic endeavors. He studied in Guadalajara under the Italian artsist Félix Bernardelli and at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City under Antonio Fabrés, Julio Ruekas, and Germán Gedovius. He attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris on a travel grant in 1905 and had his first contact with Cubism. He moved to Palma de Mallorca at the outbreak of WWII where he illustrated and published a book on Nijinsky (1919). He later returned to Mexico where he was commissioned by José Vasconcelos, minister of education, to paint the mural La Fiesta de al Santa Cruz (1925). Along with Dr. Atl he m
