(b. Chicontepec, Veracruz, Mexico, 1947). Zenil studied at the National Teachers School and attended the Escuela Nacional de Pintura y Escultura La Esmeralda. The Galería de Arte Mexicano mounted his first exhibition in Mexico City in 1895. During the 1980's he worked as a teacher until he began to exhibit his work internationally. His autobiographical mixed media works that deal with homosexuality and gay rights are generally rendered in a format that owes much to the ex-votos tradition. Like Frida Kahlo, whom he admires, they are also often self-portraits. A retrospective of his works was held at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, Monterrey, in 1991.
