(b. Montevideo, Uruguay, 1887; d. Bonn, Germany, 1977).
Cúneo began his studies at the Circulo de Bellas Artes under the Uruguayan painter Carlos María Herrera and the Uruguayan sculptor Felipi Menini. In 1907 he traveled to Europe and studied in Turin, Italy, where his friendship with his drawing teacher, Anton Mucchi, induced him to become a painter. Cúneo returned to Uruguay in 1909 and had a solo exhibition in 1910. He made frequent trips to Europe and lived there for long periods of time. He was aware of the avant-garde movements; during his long career his work alternated between expressionism and abstraction. His most notable series was the Luna (Moon) paintings, a series of expressionist paintings he executed between the 1930’s and 1950’s. During World War II he taught at the Círculo de bellas Artes and the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. During an extended stay (1954-1956) in Amsterdam, he began to execute abstract paintings
