(b. San Pedro Sula, Honduras, 1932) He studied the arts in Italy. He is considered the best portrait artist in his country and was awarded a medal in San Vito Romano, Italy. When he returned to Honduras, he became director of the National School of Fine Arts. He has exhibited in several Latin American Countries, the United States and in Europe. He received the first prize in a contest held by UNAH and the Grand Prize at the Fourth Annual Salon of Painting in Tegucigalpa. He is considered one of the best landscape artists in Honduras. He painted in the impressionist and cubist styles. His works can also be considered to be in the Fauve style, for example Jaula de Pájaros, wich he uses intense tones. His works are studies of equilibrium, harmony and color. One finds in his works the academic rigor, a great treatment of forms and spontaneity. Mario Castillo is considered a master of Honduran painting.
