(b. 1915, Honduras; d. 1951).
He has been defined as the precursor of abstract expressionism and considered the genuine representative of the School of Surrealism in Honduras. In 1938 he began his art studies at the National School of Fine Arts in Honduras. His early works which were painted in the Impressionist style included restaurants, landscapes, and life drawings as his subject matter. Aguilar's style transcended to an expressionist style as seen is his panting, Ritmo de Color, and finally merging into an abstract expressionism. Aguilar did sketches with geometric shapes and decomposed figures can be seen in La Monja. When the art style in his country was predominantly realistic with figurative subject matter, Aguilar's paintings were in the Abstract Expressionist and Geometric styles. Ricardo Aguilar is known as the precursor of avant-garde art in Honduras.
