(b. Paraguay, 1962).
Living in Argentina since 1974, Centurión has been part of the "light" esthetic movement of the '90s. He uses woolen blankets as a base material, and has painted them but more recently sews onto the blankets small handwoven doilies. Starfish, tentacles, octopi and daisies frequent his fanciful pieces. The doilies are created by his friends' grandmothers, mothers, and aunts. He evokes the domestic traditions of his youth in Paraguay, and in so doing opposes industrial production and recalls subjectivity, sentimentality, and emotion. His work is related to that of the Pattern & Decoration group formed in the U.S. by Robert Kushner and Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt, among others. Ultimately, Centurión's work is a declaration that the personal is also political, and it strives to include the private sphere in the world of contemporary art. Centurión has participated in the annual Paraguayan exhibition Obrabierta and in the Benson and Martel Prize compe
