Alberto Caro Limón





biography

(b. Mexicali, Mexico, 1968). Caro lives and works in both Tijuana and San Diego. Caros professional training includes work as a graphic designer, glass worker, dentist, sculptor, and painter. His work investigates socio-political issues related to living within the border region of San Diego and Tijuana. He has produced numerous projects involving groups of childen and community members from neighborhoods in this region. Working collaboratively, Caros projects reflect the creative interests and concerns of their participants. In 1999 he created a project titled, Designing the Border, for the Childrens Museum in San Diego. Working with students from the Museum School in San Diego and the Colegio Familia de Tijuana, the artist designed a new port of entry booth for the US/Mexican border. Students discussed with Caro specific issues related to the border and explored the physical details of government border-crossing booths. They created conceptual drawings and built a scale model that reflected in its design their interests in friendliness, security, hospitality, efficiency, and environmental sensitivity at these sites. The artists work has been exhibited at Design Worlds, The Childrens Museum, San Diego(1999); Forms of Resistance: Corridors of Power, Centro Cultural de la Raza(1997); inSITE97; Feria Mundial de Ideas para la Paz Habitat II, Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto Jovellanos de Gijon, Spain(1996), Artists Choose Artists, The Frame Maker, San Diego(1996); CEDLA, Amsterdam, The Netherlands(1995), among others. Caro has additionally organized many projects with the Border Arts workshop/Taller de Arte Fronterizo. He has recieved several awards for his work, including the International Peace and Cooperation Prize, commenmorating the 50th year of Unicef.
