(b. Mexico City, Mexico, 1966). Gutiérrez studied at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas, Mexico City and the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He lives and works in Mexico City. Initially a sculptor and installation artist, Gutiérrez has recently pursued a series of projects that explore the relationship of the artist, as acquaintance or voyeur, within specific environments. These have included: urban neighborhoods; among pedestrians in the street; within his family circle; with artists and friends; and within the rural landscape. Gutiérrez documents his works through videos and photography. Since 1996, he has sent postcards generated from his interventions to two hundred people he knows. His projects explore displacement, voyeurism, portraiture, the meaning of place, and the intrusion of artistic activity within public and private spaces.
