Diego Gutiérrez

biography

(b. Mexico City, Mexico, 1966). Gutiérrez studied at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas, Mexico City and the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He lives and works in Mexico City. Initially a sculptor and installation artist, Gutiérrez has recently pursued a series of projects that explore the relationship of the artist, as acquaintance or voyeur, within specific environments. These have included: urban neighborhoods; among pedestrians in the street; within his family circle; with artists and friends; and within the rural landscape. Gutiérrez documents his works through videos and photography. Since 1996, he has sent postcards generated from his interventions to two hundred people he knows. His projects explore displacement, voyeurism, portraiture, the meaning of place, and the intrusion of artistic activity within public and private spaces. He has carried out various interventions in the form of performances and covert documentation within prominent office buildings, such as La Torre Latinoamericana in Mexico City, and the Edificio Oviedo in Acapulco. A 1999 project involved choreographed audio and video documentation of meetings with friends at the port of Veracruz in Mexico. At present he coordinates and participates in "point of view: between two cities" a nine month project coordinated with Art in General in New York City, which consists of exchanges between artists and writers from New York City and Mexico City. Gutiérrez was a prominent member of the Mexico City artist collective space called Temístocles 44. He participated in inSITE94 and his work has been exhibited at the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico City (1993), at the Museo de Arte de Monterrey, Monterrey, México (1994), the Bridge Center for Contemporary Art, El Paso, Texas (1993) and in various galleries in Mexico, Canada, Holland, Belgium and New York City.
