(b. Mexico City, 1929). Gironella is known for his opposition to social realist paining and his interest in expressionism and fantasy. Gironella was born in Mexico City in 1929. His mother was from the Yucatan and his father was Catalan. He studied Spanish literature at the National Autonomous University in Mexico City and wrote both poetry and prose. As he grew more focused on painting he moved to New York City where he was influenced by Spanish Baroque painting. He was particularly interested in Velazquez's portrait of Queen Mariana, which inspired him to paint a series of paintings that were later exhibited in Mexico City in 1963. Gironella traveled throughout Europe where he met and was influenced by Andre Breton. He became involved with the group "Phases" and exhibited with them in Paris. Later in his career he was strongly influenced by his friendship with the filmmaker Luis Buñuel and he began exploring bizarre, erotic and grotesque subject matter. He has been wi
