(b. Monterrey, Mexico, 1925). Fernandez has successfully dealt with the same subject matter since he began painting in 1957: the harsh, impassive walls of the urban city. His native city of Monterrey has provided an endless amount of inspiration for the paintings. Fernandez' sumptuous colors and rich texture convey the lost grandeur of the nameless cities being swallowed up by urban decay. In the midst of it all, miniscule humans can be seen, enveloped in their own loneliness. Fernandez offers the viewer a voyeuristic look at the human condition through windows and doors entrenched within the oppressive, never ending walls fading from their former glory. He has shown work at Art Expo New York in 1987 and the Casa de las Americas in Cuba in 1984, among others. Fernandez has been awarded several prizes such as 2nd prize at the Concurso de Pintura "Vitro" in Monterrey in 1980 and 3rd prize at the New York International Art Competition in 1988.
