(b. Guadalajara, Mexico, 1948). Colunga briefly attended architectural school before becoming a self-taught artist. Today one of Mexico's leading artists, he has exhibited widely in Mexico, Brazil, the United States, and Europe. Colunga worked briefly with a circus, and as a result, circus and carnival imagery, magicians, street vendors, clowns and grotesques form a large part of his work. Between 1975 and 1981, Colunga made a number of trips outside Mexico--many excursions to Brazil, an extended trip to India, and other trips to Africa, Spain, and the United States. Always delighted with the magical, with tales of wonder, with fabulous characters, and with Catholic religious imagery, his bizarre canvases are fraught with bold colors and the fantastic. Since the 1980's he has experimented with traditional Mexican techniques in ceramics and wood sculpture, and with bronze castings and graphics.
