(b. Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1960). Cánovas studied in the workshops of artists in Buenos Aires, and at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. Canovas' work often makes allegorical references to still-lives through its use of common images such as bottles, vases and bowls, which are often depicted as floating over an abstract background. This and the undulating action of the fore, middle and background in his paintings lend his works a certain three-dimensionality. Canovas therefore revisits an age-old theme in a contemporary manner. Cánovas has exhibited his work internationally in solo exhibitions, and has participated in group shows such as the Havana Biennial in Cuba in 1984 and Expressions Actuelles in Nanterre, France in 1992. He was awarded the First Prize for Painting by the Fundación Fortabat/ Maison de l'Amerique Latine in 1990. Canovas has lived and worked in...
