Alfredo Ceibal

(b. Guatemala, 1954). Ceibal is a self-taught artist whose magical realism in painting parallels the literary works of Gabriel García Márquez and Miguel Angel Asturias. His colorful "naïve" style seems charming at first glance, but upon taking a closer look, one observes a variety of subversive elements. Through his paintings Ceibal addresses the dual realities of the world we live in: the celebration of life and the inevitability of death. He often focuses on ceremonies and rituals in life, particularly Latin American life, thus infusing his canvases with a feeling of hope. Ceibal has participated in group and individual shows throughout the United States and Latin America, and his work belongs in collections internationally. He currently resides in New York.
