(b. San Marcos, Guatemala, 1946). Barrios studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Guatemala. He also studied painting at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Costa Rica, and printmaking in the School of San Fernando in Madrid, Spain. Painting with great realism, Barrios revisits major themes in his work: the tropical expression of nature, common people going about their everyday lives, and the violent history of Guatemala. These various topics convey messages ranging from the triumph of nature over death, to a biting social commentary on the state of turmoil in his native land. In addition to painting, Barrios has also worked in the media of installation, video, and photography. Barrios has exhibited internationally, including the group exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Hispanic Art in New York and at the Harris Museum in England. Barrios' artwork has been awarded several prizes and he has had solo exhibitions throughout Latin America.
